Times have been tough lately, and the past two years have only emphasized the importance of government aid in troubled times. When the world was subsumed in a pandemic, industries across the globe suffered major setbacks, resulting in over hundreds and thousands of people losing their employment. This meant families becoming homeless, downsizing their lifestyles, and many even had to file for bankruptcy.
Now that the devastating effects of the pandemic are visible, governments should look into creating funds and programs that will benefit their citizens at the lower end of the earning spectrum. While some countries are tirelessly working on getting back on track, others have already initiated welfare programs. One such example is the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
What Is a Food Buck?
In the province of Nova Scotia, Farmers’ Markets are working on expanding their ‘food buck program’. If you are unfamiliar with the term ‘Food Bucks’, these are intended to allow customers to buy fresh produce at a cheaper rate. It is highly beneficial for families that come from a low-income background, permitting access to fresh produce at a reasonable price.
The Farmers’ Markets are receiving an investment of around $350,000 for their Nourishing Communities Food Program. This financial support is coming from the province’s Department of Communities, Culture, and Heritage.
What Does This Mean?
The Executive Director of the Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia was excited about the incoming funds, stating that the investment can help the program by enhancing its reach and ability to help more families in need. It will also promote the community inclusion while simultaneously promoting the local economy and provide healthy and fresh produce to the people.
The FMNS has expanded the ‘Food Bucks’ program from 12 farmers’ markets to 25 farmers’ markets across Nova Scotia. Citizens are taking pride in knowing that this program is helping families in need, especially during these uncertain times, while also keeping the money within the community and supporting the farmers in Nova Scotia.
The Farmers' Market of Nova Scotia has been the proud leader of programs and initiatives that raise awareness and improve food literacy in the community. Whether it is a child or an adult, every person deserves access to healthy and fresh produce.
